BSE – The Bombay Stock Exchange

The Bombay Stock Exchange or the BSE was formed by a small group of traders in 1875. What was formed as The Native Share & Stock Brokers Association under a banyan tree has emerged as the oldest and the largest stock exchange in India as well as Asia. In earlier years of its operation it was just a trading point for people of same interest at the Dalal Street in Mumbai but later in year 1956 the name was changed to The Bombay Stock Exchange and thus it became the first recognised stock exchange of the country. With the small beginning of just a few stocks being traded, now it has the highest number of listed companies in the world on a single exchange. In its developmental stage the BSE SENSEX (Sensitive Index) was formed with a base value of 100 and 30 constituent stocks. The origin of SENSEX gave an international recognition to the Indian markets with the SENSEX becoming the barometer of the economy and its overall health.

BSE Stock Market

Over the time the BSE has grown to such heights that not only foreign companies were listed on it but foreign investors took stake in the BSE itself. The Singapore Exchange holds a 5% stake in the Bombay Stock Exchange. The BSE gives a window to many small, medium and large companies to raise funds and expand their businesses and meet financial needs.
